Aliko Dangote has alleged that opposition to his planned refinery in Lamu, Kenya, is being influenced by some petroleum marketers and international oil companies.

The billionaire businessman spoke amid protests and legal challenges surrounding the $16bn project, which is expected to be developed in phases and eventually process about 700,000 barrels of crude oil daily.

Dangote dismissed concerns that his company had taken more land than authorised, insisting that the project was being implemented within the terms approved by the Kenyan government. He also maintained that the protests would not stop the development.

The refinery has, however, encountered resistance from residents who have raised concerns over land acquisition, compensation and possible environmental consequences. A group of Lamu residents has also taken the matter to court, leading to restrictions on some construction activities pending further proceedings.

According to Dangote, the project could generate thousands of employment opportunities during construction and provide significant infrastructure, including a power facility designed to support industrial operations.
