Former England manager Gareth Southgate has explained why he decided to walk away from the national team, saying his departure created an opportunity for both himself and the players to embrace a fresh direction.
Southgate resigned in July 2024, two days after England lost 2-1 to Spain in the European Championship final in Berlin. His exit ended an eight-year spell during which he helped the Three Lions become regular contenders in major international competitions.
The former defender said he was unwilling to rush into another managerial appointment, stressing the need to regain his energy and enjoy life before making decisions about his professional future. He also indicated that his next career move could take him beyond football.
According to Southgate, the arrival of a new coaching team and changes within the England squad demonstrated the potential benefits of allowing the national side to move forward under different leadership.
Despite failing to win a major trophy, Southgate leaves behind a record that includes the 2018 World Cup semi-finals and consecutive European Championship final appearances in 2021 and 2024. He maintained that his tenure helped restore England’s status among the leading teams in international football, adding that he was ready to explore new challenges after years in the role.
