The Independent National Electoral Commission has dismissed concerns that algorithms will determine the outcome of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, maintaining that the electoral process will remain guided by established procedures and human oversight.
INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, gave the assurance amid growing discussions about the influence of digital technology and artificial intelligence on electoral activities.
He stressed the importance of distinguishing between the use of technology to support election administration and claims that automated systems could independently decide electoral outcomes.
The commission has continued to face expectations from Nigerians to strengthen transparency, improve public confidence and ensure credible elections ahead of the next general polls. The increasing use of digital platforms has also raised questions about the security and reliability of election-related information.
Amupitan’s position comes as political parties and prospective candidates prepare for the 2027 elections. INEC is expected to ensure that its procedures remain transparent and that the use of technology supports, rather than undermines, the credibility of the electoral process.
