The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has uncovered more than 20 suspected illegal stores allegedly involved in the production and distribution of counterfeit alcoholic beverages at the International Trade Fair Complex in Lagos State. The operation led to the seizure of products valued at over ₦2 billion.
The agency’s Investigation and Enforcement Directorate carried out the raid on Tuesday, October 13, following intelligence reports about unlawful activities within the complex. According to NAFDAC, the stores were concealed in makeshift parking facilities and allegedly used to produce fake drinks and prepare expired beverages for resale.
During the operation, officials reportedly discovered individuals allegedly involved in counterfeiting popular alcoholic drink brands, altering expired products for further sale and storing prohibited imported beverages. Two suspects were arrested, while the recovered products were evacuated from the premises.
NAFDAC has urged Nigerians to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities involving the manufacture, repackaging or sale of regulated products. The agency reiterated the importance of preventing counterfeit and potentially unsafe beverages from reaching consumers, warning that such practices pose serious risks to public health.
