Dele Momodu, a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has criticised President Bola Tinubu’s leadership style, alleging that the level of political dominance under his administration is worse than what Nigerians experienced during the military rule of the late General Sani Abacha.
Momodu made the assertion while speaking on Arise News’ Prime Time, where he expressed concern over what he described as the weakening of independent institutions and the growing influence of the presidency on other arms of government.
The publisher questioned the willingness of political office holders to hold the President accountable, alleging that many governors and members of the National Assembly were unwilling to challenge decisions from the presidency.
He also drew attention to Tinubu’s political history, recalling his criticism of former President Olusegun Obasanjo when the latter was accused of attempting to expand his political influence. Momodu argued that the President’s current approach raised questions about his commitment to the democratic principles he previously defended.
Looking ahead to the 2027 general election, the ADC chieftain expressed optimism that the opposition could present a formidable challenge to Tinubu. He maintained that electoral success should be determined by the support of voters rather than the number of governors or political heavyweights backing a candidate.
Momodu added that his position on Tinubu’s re-election would have been different if the administration had delivered the results Nigerians expected, suggesting that the President’s record in office would play a significant role in shaping voters’ decisions in 2027.
