Preparations for the 2027 general elections in Kwara State have entered another phase following the release of the final list of candidates contesting seats in the National Assembly by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
One of the notable contests is expected in Kwara Central, where Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq is listed as the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, while incumbent Senator Saliu Mustapha appears on the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) platform. The development comes amid political realignments that have reshaped the state’s political landscape ahead of the elections.
Mustapha’s move to the PDP followed his failure to secure the APC governorship ticket, which went to the Speaker of the Kwara State House of Assembly, Yakubu Danladi-Salihu. His subsequent emergence as the PDP’s senatorial candidate has added another dimension to the political contest in the district.
In Kwara North, however, the PDP’s choice of Kolo Baba Jiya as its senatorial candidate has attracted controversy. Former state Commissioner for Works and Transport, Suleiman Rotimi Iliasu, has challenged the decision, maintaining that he won the party’s primary election and seeking legal redress over the substitution of his name.
For Kwara South, the commission’s list includes Adewoye Olalekan for the APC and Popoola Saheed for the PDP. With candidates now officially listed, attention is expected to shift towards campaign activities, party mobilisation and the resolution of outstanding disputes that could affect the final shape of the contests.
