The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Nentawe Yilwatda, has expressed confidence in his party’s political strength ahead of the 2027 general elections, insisting that opposition parties would struggle to match the ruling party. His comments come as opposition figures intensify discussions about presenting a common candidate to challenge the APC.

Yilwatda maintained that the APC’s nationwide structure and established political network give it a strong presence across the country. He also expressed confidence in the party’s ability to mobilise supporters and defend its position as political activities gradually gather momentum ahead of the next election cycle.

Meanwhile, opposition parties have continued exploring the possibility of cooperation, with discussions focusing on how to avoid splitting votes among multiple candidates. Supporters of the idea argue that a united platform could improve coordination among opposition groups, although reaching agreement on a candidate and shared political agenda remains a major challenge.

The emerging political contest is expected to involve negotiations over party interests, leadership arrangements and the policies that could form the basis of any alliance. Differences in ideology, regional considerations and individual ambitions could also influence whether opposition parties succeed in reaching a common position.

With the 2027 elections approaching, both the APC and opposition parties face the task of strengthening their organisations and winning public support. While Yilwatda remains confident in his party’s prospects, the evolving discussions among opposition groups signal that coalition-building may become an important feature of the next electoral contest.
