Senator Godswill Akpabio has received public endorsements from fellow lawmakers seeking his return to the leadership of the upper legislative chamber after the 2027 general elections.
The show of support emerged during Thursday’s plenary session, where Senate Chief Whip Tahir Monguno and Senator Cyril Fasuyi expressed confidence in Akpabio’s chances of retaining the position in the 11th National Assembly.
Monguno, who represents Borno North Senatorial District, predicted that a significant number of current senators would secure re-election and return to the chamber. He subsequently declared that the Senate presidency and other principal leadership positions should remain with the incumbent officers.
Senator Fasuyi, representing Ekiti North, also endorsed the move, arguing that Akpabio should continue to preside over the Senate in the next legislative session.
The declarations prompted Akpabio to seek the opinion of other lawmakers present in the chamber. When he asked senators who supported the position to indicate their approval, the response was audible, while no clear opposition was heard.
Akpabio subsequently remarked that the response had settled the matter, although the exchange did not amount to a formal election for the leadership of the next Senate.
The endorsements come as political activities gradually intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections, with attention turning to the composition and leadership of the next National Assembly.
However, Akpabio’s return is not guaranteed by the expressions of support recorded during plenary. The Senate President and other presiding officers of the 11th National Assembly will be determined through the formal election process following the inauguration of the new legislature.
The development nevertheless provides an early indication of support for Akpabio among some serving lawmakers as political calculations over the next Senate leadership begin to take shape.
