Political parties have begun trading accusations over campaign financing ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, with opposition groups expressing concern about their ability to compete financially with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) and Young Progressives Party (YPP), alongside the Obidient Movement Worldwide, have raised concerns about the financial demands of electioneering. They argue that economic hardship, alleged political intimidation and difficulties in attracting donors could weaken opposition campaigns.

To overcome the challenges, some opposition parties say they will prioritise community meetings, online campaigns, voluntary donations and grassroots mobilisation instead of relying heavily on expensive rallies. They also argue that elections should be determined by candidates’ credibility, policy proposals and public support rather than financial strength.

The concerns have intensified following changes introduced by the Electoral Act 2026, which increased campaign expenditure limits for political candidates. Presidential candidates can now spend up to ₦10 billion, while the ceiling for governorship candidates has risen to ₦3 billion. The maximum individual or corporate contribution to a political party or candidate has also increased from ₦50 million to ₦500 million.

However, the APC has dismissed allegations that it enjoys an unfair financial advantage through access to public resources. The party’s National Director of Publicity, Bala Ibrahim, challenged opposition groups to provide evidence of any diversion of government funds for party campaigns, insisting that the APC’s financial capacity reflects its membership and support base. The dispute highlights growing concerns about campaign financing, political competition and the need for a level playing field as parties prepare for the 2027 elections.
