British-Nigerian boxing star Anthony Joshua has promised to approach his highly anticipated encounter with Tyson Fury with caution, saying he intends to avoid the mistakes that cost Deontay Wilder in his previous battles against the British heavyweight.
Joshua and Fury are scheduled to meet on December 11 at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff, Wales, in a contest expected to attract worldwide attention. The fight will also be broadcast live on Netflix.
Speaking in an interview with The Ring, Joshua explained that Wilder’s determination to finish Fury whenever he appeared vulnerable often resulted in unnecessary energy loss. He noted that such an aggressive approach allowed Fury to recover and regain control of their encounters.
The former two-time world heavyweight champion said he would not allow frustration or the desire for an early knockout to dictate his performance. According to him, maintaining composure, managing his strength and making calculated decisions would be essential to securing victory.
Beyond bragging rights, the contest could also offer Joshua an opportunity to become a three-time world heavyweight champion. The World Boxing Association super heavyweight title is expected to be at stake, while promoters have indicated that the winners of major heavyweight contests could pursue unification fights in 2027.
