A total of 1,000 pupils in Abia State have received school supplies through an intervention spearheaded by the wife of the state governor, Mrs. Priscilla Otti, to help children from low-income households remain focused on their education.
The beneficiaries were selected from 50 public schools spread across the state’s 17 local government areas. The programme was organised by the Safe Tent Care Initiative in collaboration with the Abia State Universal Basic Education Board, with particular attention given to children whose families face financial difficulties.
Mrs. Otti said the intervention was designed to address some of the challenges preventing vulnerable pupils from enjoying a smooth learning experience. She expressed her desire to reach additional children in subsequent phases, with plans to increase the number of beneficiaries beyond 2,000 and extend assistance to more rural communities.
The initiative received commendation from education and government officials, including the ASUBEB Chairman, Lady Ezihe Lydia Onuoha, and the Commissioner for Poverty Alleviation and Social Protection, Mrs. Ngozi Blessing Phillip. They emphasised the importance of supporting children whose families struggle to meet basic educational needs.
As part of efforts to sustain the programme, Mrs. Otti also disclosed plans to organise a Rising Gems Talent Show and Gospel Music Concert to generate funds for vulnerable children. She encouraged well-meaning Nigerians, corporate organisations and other stakeholders to support initiatives that give disadvantaged pupils a better chance of succeeding in school.
