The Peoples Democratic Party’s governorship candidate in Enugu State, Chief Uche Nnaji, has received an expression of political support from a coalition comprising traders affected by market demolitions, members of the Arewa Northern Forum and other interest groups ahead of the 2027 governorship election.
The groups announced their position during a visit to Nnaji’s campaign office in Enugu, where they raised concerns about the difficulties facing traders and small business owners. They cited the loss of trading spaces, multiple taxation and challenges in securing alternative locations for their businesses.
The leader of the Arewa Northern Forum, Innocent Iwual, said members of the association were spread across Enugu State and had participated in previous elections. He expressed disappointment over what he described as unfulfilled promises by political leaders and assured Nnaji that the group was prepared to support his ambition in the next election.
Responding, Nnaji pledged that, if elected governor, his administration would work towards rebuilding demolished markets and providing replacement shops to affected traders without charge, subject to available resources. He also promised to review the state’s tax system, address levies he considers excessive and pursue industrial development in sectors such as oil, cement, iron ore and steel to generate employment.
The PDP candidate further proposed free healthcare for elderly residents, although the qualifying age would be determined later. While the visiting groups expressed confidence in his proposed agenda, the pledges remain campaign commitments ahead of the 2027 election. Their implementation would depend on the outcome of the election and the policies and resources available to a future administration.
