The Federal Government has introduced a fresh intervention to address financial barriers to education, with First Lady Oluremi Tinubu announcing a ₦2 billion package for 100,000 schoolchildren across Nigeria.
The initiative, known as the Learners Retention Support Programme, will provide ₦20,000 to each beneficiary in its initial phase to help ease the financial burden on families and encourage children to continue their education.
In a related effort to improve school attendance among female students, the First Lady flagged off the distribution of two million packs of sanitary pads, as well as educational supplies, to girls in public basic schools.
The intervention is being carried out in collaboration with the Universal Basic Education Commission, with a focus on removing obstacles that keep children away from classrooms and addressing challenges that contribute to school dropouts.
The launch took place in Abuja during the commemoration of the 2026 International Day of the Girl Child, highlighting efforts to strengthen educational opportunities and support the welfare of school-age children nationwide.
