Nigeria’s electricity transmission system is set for a major restructuring following the Federal Government’s approval of a plan to establish additional power grids aimed at reducing the frequency and impact of nationwide blackouts.

The initiative is expected to introduce greater flexibility into electricity transmission by creating additional networks in the eastern and western regions. The move comes amid persistent concerns over the vulnerability of the country’s existing power infrastructure and the disruptions caused when the national grid fails.

Minister of Power Joseph Tegbe announced the approval at an energy conference in Lagos, revealing that arrangements were being made to advance the projects through the procurement stage. He indicated that Nigerians might begin to experience the benefits of the proposed changes within two to three years.

Beyond expanding the network, the government is examining the state of existing transmission facilities to determine the extent of repairs and upgrades required. The exercise will help identify infrastructure weaknesses and establish which interventions should receive urgent attention.

Tegbe also pointed to the age of some transmission towers and electricity lines as a major concern, stressing the need to replace outdated facilities and improve the system’s capacity. The government hopes that the planned investments and technical assessments will provide a stronger foundation for dependable electricity delivery and reduce disruptions affecting homes, commercial activities and industrial operations.
