The Federal Government has approved the development of new eastern and western electricity grids as part of a broader strategy to tackle Nigeria’s persistent power grid failures and improve electricity supply across the country.

Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, announced the plan at an energy conference organised by the HBSAN in Lagos, explaining that the initiative would strengthen the country’s transmission infrastructure and reduce weaknesses responsible for repeated disruptions. He said preparations were underway to begin the procurement process, with the impact of the projects expected to become noticeable within two to three years.

Tegbe disclosed that a nationwide technical assessment of electricity infrastructure was also in progress to determine the condition of existing facilities and identify areas requiring immediate attention. According to him, the exercise would help the government direct resources towards critical problems rather than spending money on equipment that does not require repairs.

The minister explained that Nigeria’s electricity demand had been divided into three energy zones to guide the prioritisation of interventions. He highlighted the Lagos and Abuja corridors as particularly important, noting that addressing challenges in these areas could significantly improve the performance of the country’s electricity network.

He attributed some of the sector’s persistent difficulties to ageing transmission infrastructure, revealing that certain towers and power lines had been in service for decades. Tegbe said the proposed grid expansion, alongside the ongoing technical audit, would guide efforts to modernise the network and establish a more reliable electricity system for households and businesses.
