A mother and her child have lost their lives in a road accident involving two container-laden trucks around Mile 2, close to Freeman Market, on the Apapa-bound axis of Lagos State.
The victims were reportedly caught in the disaster when the trucks overturned, leaving them trapped beneath the vehicles and their loads. The incident prompted an emergency response from traffic management officials and other responders.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) deployed rescue personnel to the scene, alongside a crane and a heavy-duty towing vehicle to remove the wreckage. The affected portion of the road was temporarily cordoned off to allow the operation to proceed safely.
Motorists travelling towards Apapa were redirected through an adjoining service lane while officials worked to clear the obstruction and restore movement.
After the recovery exercise, the remains of the deceased were taken to the police mortuary in Yaba for further procedures.
LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, called for a comprehensive probe into the circumstances that led to the accident. He said investigators should consider possible mechanical failure, improper loading, excessive cargo weight and driver-related factors.
He also urged truck owners and operators to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy and that containers are properly secured before being transported. According to him, strict compliance with safety requirements is necessary to reduce the risk of similar tragedies.
The incident has renewed concerns about the dangers posed by heavy-duty vehicles on busy Lagos roads, particularly where container trucks operate alongside other motorists and pedestrians. The outcome of the investigation is expected to help establish the cause of the crash.
