Pharmacists have urged medicine distributors and other stakeholders in Nigeria’s pharmaceutical sector to make the protection of human lives their foremost responsibility rather than focusing primarily on commercial gains.

They stressed that the safety, quality and effectiveness of medicines must remain central to the drug supply chain, warning that business decisions that disregard patients’ welfare could expose Nigerians to serious health complications.

The pharmacists maintained that access to safe and effective medicines requires responsible marketing practices, proper handling of pharmaceutical products and strict adherence to professional and regulatory standards. They also called for greater cooperation among stakeholders to ensure that medicines reaching consumers meet the required safety requirements.

They further emphasised the importance of strengthening oversight across the pharmaceutical industry to prevent practices capable of putting patients at risk. According to them, drug marketers must recognise that their activities have direct consequences for public health and should therefore operate with integrity and accountability.

The professionals also highlighted the need for improved collaboration between pharmacists, healthcare providers and other players in the medicine distribution network. They noted that effective coordination would help address challenges associated with the availability, distribution and appropriate use of medicines.

They called on stakeholders to support measures that promote responsible pharmaceutical practices, insisting that the commercial interests of businesses should not override the fundamental duty to protect consumers.

The pharmacists reiterated that building public confidence in the pharmaceutical sector requires a sustained commitment to ethical conduct, quality assurance and the wellbeing of patients.
