As the world marks the 2026 World Food Day, Hon. Paschal Karibe Ojigwe, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate for Bende Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, has called for renewed commitment to agriculture, food security and the economic empowerment of farmers.

Ojigwe stressed that agriculture remains a critical pillar of economic development, noting that improving food production is essential to reducing hunger, creating employment and improving the living conditions of families across Bende Federal Constituency and Nigeria at large.

He noted that farmers, particularly small-scale producers in rural communities, deserve greater attention through access to improved seedlings, modern farming equipment, affordable agricultural inputs, storage facilities and markets where they can sell their produce at fair prices.

According to him, empowering farmers would not only increase food availability but also create opportunities for young people and women to participate meaningfully in agricultural production, processing and distribution.

The NDC candidate also emphasised the need to encourage young people to see agriculture as a viable business capable of generating sustainable income, rather than an occupation limited to traditional farming practices. He maintained that investment in modern agricultural techniques, irrigation and agro-processing could unlock the economic potential of communities across Bende.

Ojigwe further called for stronger collaboration among government institutions, private investors, agricultural cooperatives and community leaders to develop practical solutions to food insecurity and ensure that farmers receive the support needed to expand production.

He observed that food security goes beyond having food available in markets, stressing that families must also be able to afford nutritious meals without excessive pressure on their household income.

The 2026 World Food Day is being observed under the theme, “Innovate Today, Nourish Tomorrow,” which highlights the importance of innovation, traditional knowledge and inclusive approaches in building sustainable food systems.
