More than 40,000 women in Katsina State are set to receive business capital under a new economic empowerment initiative aimed at strengthening small businesses and improving household incomes. The fund is being disbursed through the Community Investment Fund under the Nigeria for Women Programme Scale-Up Project.
Vice President Kashim Shettima, who flagged off the programme in Katsina, said the intervention is designed to go beyond simply giving out money. He urged beneficiaries to invest the funds wisely, keep proper financial records and maintain the savings culture that qualified them for the programme.
Katsina State Governor Dikko Radda disclosed that the state has committed more than four billion naira to the programme and approved another four billion naira, bringing its total commitment to eight billion naira. He said the scheme is being expanded across the state’s 34 local government areas in phases.
The beneficiaries are drawn from Women Affinity Groups whose members have participated in collective savings and met the required conditions. The programme is expected to help women establish new businesses, expand existing ventures and improve their ability to generate sustainable income.
Authorities say the disbursement is only the beginning, with further phases expected to accommodate more eligible groups. The state government has also appealed for additional support from development partners to extend the programme, particularly to women in underserved communities.
