The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Edo State has called on young Nigerians to reject illicit drugs, warning that substance abuse could undermine their ambitions, health and future opportunities.
The state commander of the agency, Mitchell Ofoyeju, made the appeal during an awareness programme organised at the NDLEA headquarters in Benin City for members of the NDLEA/National Youth Service Corps Drug Free Club in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area.
The sensitisation session focused on identifying the dangers associated with drug misuse, recognising warning signs and understanding measures that could help prevent addiction. Ofoyeju urged the corps members to use the knowledge acquired to educate others and promote responsible behaviour in their communities.
Etsako West Local Government Chairman, Romeo Omoike, commended the agency for its efforts to discourage drug abuse among young people. He encouraged the corps members to become active advocates for a drug-free society, stressing the importance of youth participation in tackling substance misuse.
Also speaking, the NDLEA Deputy State Commander, Victor Isibor, challenged the participants to translate the lessons from the programme into practical action by spreading awareness among their peers and within their host communities.
The president of the club, Anyakora Chisom, expressed appreciation to the agency for the training and pledged that members would sustain their involvement in the anti-drug campaign. The programme also featured an interactive session that allowed participants to seek clarification on issues relating to substance abuse and prevention.
A total of 60 corps members, comprising 45 females and 15 males, attended the exercise. The event ended with the presentation of certificates to outgoing club executives, recognising their participation in efforts to promote drug awareness and discourage substance misuse among Nigerian youths.
