No fewer than 10.46 million vulnerable households in Nigeria have received a combined ₦658.9bn in government cash assistance as of September 2026, according to a report highlighting the need for more sustainable support for low-income families.
The World Bank, while assessing Nigeria’s economic and social welfare policies, urged authorities to strengthen the system through which financial assistance is delivered to citizens facing economic difficulties.
The institution noted that cash transfers could provide immediate relief to disadvantaged families but stressed that their impact would depend on the regularity of payments, the amount received by beneficiaries and the number of households covered.
It also called on the Federal Government and state administrations to take greater responsibility for financing social welfare interventions rather than relying predominantly on temporary funding arrangements.
The bank explained that stronger collaboration between federal and state authorities would help improve the identification of beneficiaries, eliminate weaknesses in payment systems and ensure that assistance reaches the people who need it most.
It further recommended that social protection programmes receive more predictable funding through government budgets, allowing vulnerable households to depend on a more stable system of financial support.
The report underscored the importance of developing a long-term framework for poverty reduction, noting that effective social welfare policies could help protect disadvantaged Nigerians against economic shocks and improve their living conditions.
