Troops of the Nigerian Army have arrested 19 suspects, including a serving police sergeant, over alleged pipeline vandalism in the Nkwonta area of Isuikwuato Local Government Area of Abia State.
The suspects were reportedly apprehended on Friday, October 23, 2026, by personnel of the 143 Battalion while allegedly dismantling underground pipelines and preparing to transport the recovered materials in a waiting heavy-duty trailer.
According to the account of the operation, the suspects allegedly attempted to bribe the soldiers to secure their release. However, the military personnel rejected the offer and arrested the entire group, seizing the vehicles and equipment linked to the alleged crime.
Speaking on Monday, October 26, the Executive Mayor of Isuikwuato LGA, Hon. Chinedu Ekeke, praised the troops for their professionalism and resistance to corruption. He specifically commended the battalion’s commanding officer, Lt. Col. A. M. Rabe, company team leader, Lt. F. A. Bashir, and other personnel involved in the operation.
Ekeke disclosed that one of the suspects was identified as Sergeant Daniel Emeka, who is attached to the Ovim Division of the Nigeria Police Force. The other suspects reportedly comprise a truck driver, a bus driver, a conductor, 12 loaders and two metal workers allegedly involved in cutting and dismantling industrial materials.
The mayor said the arrest was significant amid growing concerns over the destruction and attempted theft of infrastructure across the local government area. Previous incidents cited by the council include an alleged attempt to steal equipment from the Isuikwuato Local Government pig farm and the vandalism of high-tension electricity cables along the Amiyi Obinaohia-Abia State University corridor.
The suspects, together with the recovered materials and impounded vehicles, have been handed over to the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps for further investigation and possible prosecution.
Ekeke urged parents, community leaders and other stakeholders to pay closer attention to the activities of their children and wards, warning that the destruction of public infrastructure threatens security, disrupts essential services and undermines development efforts. He maintained that those found culpable would be dealt with in accordance with the law.
