Nigerian athletes preparing for the 2026 Youth Olympic Games in Dakar, Senegal, have been urged to protect the country’s reputation by competing without resorting to performance-enhancing drugs.
The President of the Nigeria Olympic Committee, Habu Gumel, gave the warning during the formal handover of Team Nigeria ahead of the competition, scheduled for October 31 to November 13.
Gumel reminded the young sportsmen and women that success should be achieved through hard work, discipline and natural ability rather than the use of banned substances. He stressed that any involvement in doping could undermine their careers and damage Nigeria’s image on the international stage.
He also acknowledged the contributions of the National Sports Commission towards getting the contingent ready for the tournament. According to him, the provision of competition kits, welfare support and preparations for the event would help the athletes concentrate on their performances.
The NOC president expressed optimism about Nigeria’s participation, encouraging the competitors to approach their events with determination while respecting the rules governing international sports.
He further welcomed the introduction of financial incentives for medal-winning athletes, noting that the reward scheme could motivate the team to strive for outstanding results.
Gumel urged the participants to take advantage of the competition to develop their skills, gain valuable international exposure and build a foundation for future success at major sporting events.
The Dakar Youth Olympic Games will provide a platform for emerging talents from across the world to compete, with Nigeria seeking to make a strong impression through the performances of its young athletes.
