Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, has unveiled artificial intelligence-powered robotic tutors and other digital learning innovations at Bayelsa Medical University in Yenagoa, in a move aimed at modernising medical education and strengthening research.
The unveiling took place alongside the presentation of the university’s 2025–2029 Strategic Plan. Governor Diri urged the institution to embrace emerging technologies to make teaching and learning more interactive, while stressing that robots and digital tools should support rather than replace classroom teaching and lecturers’ mentorship.
The governor also challenged the university’s management to translate its strategic plan into measurable progress in academic standards, research, infrastructure and graduate quality. He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting the institution’s development and promoting science and technical education across the state.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Dimie Ogoina said the university was expanding its use of artificial intelligence, virtual reality and mixed-reality technology. Other initiatives include improved digital connectivity, a confidential communication platform for students and staff, and plans for centres dedicated to digital health, biomedical innovation and regional health research.
Ogoina disclosed that the university had secured accreditation for nine academic programmes, while its nursing students recorded a 96 per cent pass rate in professional examinations. Governor Diri also inspected facilities at the university’s teaching hospital, expressing confidence that its diagnostic equipment, including CT scanning technology, would improve access to specialised healthcare and reduce the need for residents to travel outside Bayelsa for certain medical services.
