Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has set January 2027 as the target for the completion of the new Creek Road Market in Port Harcourt, as his administration moves to tackle street trading and ease difficulties associated with road construction in the area.

Fubara announced the timeline during an inspection of the project in the Old Port Harcourt Township, where he assessed the level of work and discussed measures to ensure the facility is delivered as scheduled.

The governor explained that the absence of sufficient trading spaces had forced many traders to conduct business along Creek Road, creating obstructions for motorists and posing challenges to ongoing road rehabilitation. He said completing the market would provide a more organised environment for commercial activities.

According to him, the first phase of the facility is expected to provide about 700 shops and stalls, with separate sections for the sale of wet and dry goods. The arrangement is intended to accommodate traders operating along the road and reduce the pressure on public spaces.

Fubara expressed confidence in the contractor’s performance and promised that the state government would work towards resolving issues affecting the smooth execution of the project. He maintained that timely completion remained a priority for his administration.

He further noted that the market formed part of broader efforts to improve the condition of the Old Port Harcourt Township, where indiscriminate trading and congestion have affected movement and environmental cleanliness.

The governor said the project, alongside the rehabilitation of roads in the area, would help restore order, improve the business environment and provide residents with a cleaner and more accessible community.
