Members of the House of Representatives have called for urgent government intervention as worsening erosion threatens 32 communities in Imo State. The lawmakers warned that the situation requires immediate attention to prevent further environmental damage and protect residents whose homes, roads and livelihoods may be at risk.
The appeal highlights the growing impact of erosion on affected communities, where the loss of land and damage to infrastructure can disrupt transportation, economic activities and access to essential services. Residents in vulnerable areas also face the possibility of displacement if the threat continues without effective control measures.
The lawmakers are seeking emergency action from the relevant government agencies to assess the affected locations and implement appropriate erosion-control projects. Such interventions could include improved drainage systems, soil stabilisation and other environmental engineering measures suited to the severity of the damage in each community.
They also stressed the importance of coordinated action between federal, state and local authorities to ensure that the response is timely and sustainable. Beyond immediate emergency measures, long-term planning and adequate funding will be necessary to prevent recurring erosion damage and protect communities from further deterioration.
The call has renewed attention on the need for stronger environmental management in erosion-prone parts of the South-East. Residents of the affected communities will be looking to the authorities for concrete action to safeguard lives, preserve property and prevent the crisis from worsening.
