The Anambra State Government has requested 70 billion naira from the Federal Government’s Stabilisation Fund to address worsening security concerns, erosion, flooding and infrastructure challenges across the state. The proposed funding is expected to support critical projects aimed at protecting communities, sustaining public services and strengthening economic activities.

Presenting the request in Abuja, Secretary to the State Government, Chiamaka Nnake, said insecurity and sit-at-home restrictions had disrupted businesses, reduced government revenue and weakened investor confidence. She explained that additional resources would help strengthen security operations through the provision of patrol vehicles, surveillance equipment, communication tools and personnel training.

The environmental situation also featured prominently in the state’s appeal, with Nnake disclosing that Anambra has more than 1,000 identified erosion sites affecting 146 communities to varying degrees. She estimated that approximately 170 billion naira would be required to address the critical erosion locations, highlighting the scale of the challenge facing the state.

Beyond security and environmental protection, the proposed 70 billion naira intervention would cover areas such as healthcare, education, agriculture, solid minerals and tourism. The state government said the funding would complement ongoing projects, including erosion control, flood management, road rehabilitation and land reclamation, while helping sustain social programmes and create opportunities for economic growth.

However, the request has not yet been approved. The Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission said its committee would examine the state’s financial records, project costs, feasibility and expected benefits before making any recommendations. The review will determine whether the proposal can advance through the required approval process.
