A community-based cycling initiative is set to expand its reach in Lagos following a pledge by the Onilegbale of Lagos, Oloye Gbolahan Oki, to support the development of young cyclists and establish a club that will nurture emerging talents.
The monarch made the commitment while receiving members of Velo NG Community at his palace during activities marking Isese Day. The delegation, comprising 25 cyclists, visited to celebrate the occasion and promote the preservation of Lagos’ cultural identity.
As part of the proposed arrangement, between 50 and 100 children and young people are expected to receive sponsorship to become founding members of the cycling club. The project is designed to provide participants with opportunities to develop sporting abilities while acquiring useful life skills.
The initiative will bring together FT Cycle Care, Velo NG Community and the Catalytic Cycling Foundation. Its activities are expected to cover cycling instruction, mentorship, bicycle maintenance and participation in competitions, giving young people a platform to discover and develop their potential.
Beyond sports, the project seeks to encourage discipline, promote physical fitness and provide constructive alternatives to drug abuse and other social challenges affecting young people. It is also expected to support cultural promotion, tourism and skills development within the community.
Velo NG Community, which operates from the Fadeyi area of Lagos, has reportedly introduced more than 200 young people to cycling through organised rides and workshops. The group also exposes participants to entrepreneurship and civic responsibility, reflecting its broader objective of using sports to encourage personal development and positive community engagement.
