Real Madrid manager José Mourinho has warned his players against becoming complacent following their 2-1 victory over Barcelona, insisting that winning the Spanish league title remains the club’s ultimate ambition.
The Portuguese tactician spoke after Real Madrid secured a crucial El Clasico victory at Camp Nou on Sunday, reducing Barcelona’s lead at the top of the La Liga table to three points.
Kylian Mbappé proved decisive for the visitors, scoring twice to hand Madrid an important victory against their fierce rivals. The result also ended Barcelona’s impressive run of nine consecutive domestic league victories.
Mourinho praised his players for their discipline, determination and collective effort, describing the team as a strong group with the right mentality to compete at the highest level. He maintained that the victory was earned through composure and quality rather than luck.
The manager also highlighted the importance of having different types of players in midfield, explaining that their contrasting qualities had improved Madrid’s defensive balance and attacking effectiveness.
Despite celebrating the victory, Mourinho insisted that his team must remain focused on upcoming matches rather than dwell on beating Barcelona. He warned that dropping points in their next fixture could undermine the significance of the Clasico result.
Mourinho, who returned to Real Madrid for a second spell after his first tenure between 2010 and 2013, has now recorded six victories and six defeats in his El Clasico appearances as the club’s manager.
Meanwhile, Barcelona boss Hansi Flick acknowledged that his players lacked the freshness needed to deliver their best performance following a demanding schedule. He said his team must recover properly and prepare to respond to the setback.
With the gap between both sides now reduced to three points, Real Madrid have strengthened their position in the title race, while Barcelona face increased pressure to protect their advantage at the summit.
