More than two decades after some of them left active service, pensioners of the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency are still pursuing unpaid retirement benefits, a situation that has prompted their union to consider fresh protest action.

The Contributory Pensioners Union of Nigeria, NAMA branch, said the prolonged wait for pension adjustments and accumulated arrears had become increasingly difficult for elderly retirees. The group is demanding concrete action from the agency to resolve the outstanding payments.

The dispute has also raised questions about the implementation of pension-related funding. The union pointed to a reported ₦2.5bn release in April 2026 for pension obligations and called for urgent attention to the benefits that remain unpaid.

Branch secretary Lawal Wasiu said the retirees were dissatisfied with the pace of efforts to resolve their complaints. He questioned the value of another meeting proposed for November 3, arguing that previous engagements had not produced the desired outcome.

The union further disclosed that the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission had reportedly completed the calculations for the pension adjustments and submitted the relevant details to NAMA. It therefore wants the agency to move beyond administrative processes and commence payment.

In a letter dated October 12, 2026, the pensioners formally pressed for the implementation of the increases and settlement of the outstanding arrears. They also complained about inadequate communication from management since discussions held on June 10.

The union said the consequences of the delay were particularly troubling for retirees above 70 years old. It noted that some former workers had died while waiting for their benefits, adding urgency to its demand for a resolution.

Wasiu also expressed dissatisfaction with the way the union’s concerns had been handled, alleging that its representatives had not received adequate attention despite efforts to engage the agency.

The pensioners warned that they could resort to demonstrations if their demands remained unresolved. They called on NAMA management to announce a definite payment plan, settle verified claims and prevent further hardship among former employees.
