A demolition operation in the Ijegun area of Lagos State has ended in tragedy, leaving one worker dead and another injured after a storey building collapsed while being pulled down.
The incident occurred on Adedoyin Street, Ijegun, in the Ikotun area of Alimosho Local Government Area, barely three days after another building collapse claimed a life elsewhere in Lagos.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) confirmed the incident in a statement on Monday, explaining that its emergency response team received a distress call at about 1:44 pm and immediately dispatched personnel from its Igando base to the location.
Preliminary findings indicated that workers were manually demolishing the building when the structure suddenly gave way. One worker became trapped beneath the debris, while another sustained an injury to his hand and was taken to a hospital before emergency responders arrived.
Rescue personnel from LASEMA’s Igando and Cappa bases worked alongside officials of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service and the Lagos State Ambulance Service to retrieve the trapped worker. However, the victim was pronounced dead after being recovered from the rubble.
The deceased’s remains were handed over to the police at the Ikotun Division in the presence of the divisional police officer before being released to a family member in accordance with established procedures.
Following the incident, authorities cordoned off the affected location to prevent further danger and allow the relevant agencies to assess the site.
The latest tragedy comes after another building collapsed on Akinola Street, off Ikorodu Road, in the Fadeyi area of Lagos on Friday. That incident left one person dead and three others injured, according to LASEMA.
The recurring incidents have renewed concerns about safety precautions during building demolition and the need for strict compliance with established procedures to protect construction workers and residents.
