Motorists and commuters were left stranded for hours on Monday after flooding disrupted traffic around the Ogba area of Lagos State, renewing concerns over a drainage problem that residents say has persisted for years.

The flooding occurred around the junction connecting Ogba, Agege and Wempco roads following rainfall, with the resulting traffic congestion spreading to Oba Ogunji Road and adjoining routes.

Several drivers struggled to navigate the waterlogged roads, while some vehicles reportedly broke down after encountering the floodwaters. The situation further worsened traffic movement as road users attempted to manoeuvre through the affected sections.

A motorist, Sodiq Afolabi, who was travelling towards the OPIC end of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, said he had spent nearly two hours in traffic despite expecting to arrive at his destination much earlier.

Residents also expressed frustration over the recurring nature of the problem. Sanya Adeolu, who lives in the community, said rainfall regularly leaves the roads flooded, sometimes exposing vehicles to engine damage and forcing owners to spend money on repairs.

Another motorist, Funsho Oyeyemi, urged the government to address the situation, arguing that previous road repairs had failed to eliminate the flooding. He said even a brief period of rainfall was enough to leave the area submerged and disrupt the movement of people heading to work or attending appointments.

A resident identified simply as Tony warned that repeated flooding could undermine the road infrastructure and damage sections that had already been repaired. He called for improvements to the drainage system, stressing that resurfacing the road alone would not provide a lasting solution.

Traffic officials also faced difficulties managing the congestion around the affected junction as motorists struggled to move through the flooded sections.

Meanwhile, the Lagos State Commissioner for Information, Gbenga Omotoso, could not be reached for comments as calls to his telephone lines went unanswered. A text message sent to him had also not received a response at the time the report was filed.

Residents and road users are calling for a comprehensive drainage intervention to prevent repeated flooding, reduce travel delays and protect vehicles and road infrastructure from further damage.
