A fresh economic development agenda for Ukwa East has emerged as Dr Kelechi Anosike, the Peoples Democratic Party’s governorship candidate in Abia State, promised to pursue renewed oil production, rehabilitate key roads and restore abandoned industrial investments if elected in 2027.

Anosike made the commitments during a meeting with stakeholders in Ukwa East Local Government Area, where he presented proposals aimed at turning the area’s natural resources into economic benefits for its people.

A major part of his programme involves reopening oil wells in Ndoki land. The candidate said he would engage the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited within his first 100 days in office to investigate the circumstances surrounding the wells’ closure and explore ways to resume production.

He also indicated plans to seek federal assistance for further oil exploration in the area, expressing optimism that increased petroleum activities could generate revenue and create employment opportunities for residents.

Beyond the oil sector, Anosike identified the need to revive Abia Palm, an industrial establishment that previously provided jobs for thousands of people. He said restoring the company could stimulate economic activities, create new employment opportunities and improve livelihoods.

The candidate also proposed investigating the commercial potential of silica deposits around Azumini River for possible glass production. He said the initiative would involve geological assessments and engagement with Chinese experts to determine the viability of establishing an industry around the mineral resource.

On infrastructure, Anosike promised to prioritise the rehabilitation of Obohia Road, including its collapsed section, alongside improvements to Ohanku Road. He also expressed support for efforts to advance the proposed Azumini Sea Port project through engagement with the Federal Government.

The proposals received support from some party leaders and community representatives at the meeting. Anosike’s running mate, Elder Amah Abraham, and the PDP’s Abia South senatorial candidate, Chinyere Onuoha, expressed confidence in the candidate’s development agenda.

However, Ndoki Development Union President General, Chisom Nwachukwu, drew attention to the community’s longstanding infrastructure and industrial challenges. He stressed the importance of restoring Abia Palm, improving road networks and pursuing the proposed seaport project.

At the end of the engagement, the Ndoki Development Union endorsed Anosike ahead of the 2027 governorship election, signalling its support for his proposed approach to economic development in the area.
