Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma has called for stronger local government institutions, stressing that effective grassroots administration is essential to delivering government programmes to Nigerians.

Uzodimma, who chairs the Progressive Governors Forum, made the remarks at the 2026 General Assembly of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) in Abuja, where he reaffirmed President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to strengthening local councils.

He explained that the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda was intended to benefit Nigerians at every level of governance, including communities that depend on local councils for basic services and infrastructure.

The governor’s comments come against the backdrop of continued discussions over the implementation of financial autonomy for Nigeria’s 774 local government areas. In July 2024, the Supreme Court ruled that allocations from the Federation Account should be paid directly to democratically elected local councils.

Meanwhile, the ALGON assembly reviewed the association’s activities since its previous general meeting in March 2021, considered its annual budgets and approved proposed amendments to its constitution aimed at improving administrative efficiency.

Members also endorsed plans to restructure the association’s Board of Trustees to fill vacant positions and approved changing the title of its administrative head from Secretary-General to Director-General.

ALGON National President Bello Lawal urged council officials to improve their administrative capacity and ensure that local governments play a stronger role in national development. He said the association would align its programmes with the Federal Government’s agenda to improve service delivery across the country.

The meeting brought together local government representatives from the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, alongside government officials, including Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology Kingsley Udeh.
