Exercise your democratic right responsibly, peacefully and lawfully.

The Nigeria Police Force has launched a major capacity-building exercise for 10,000 officers as preparations intensify for the 2027 general elections. The programme is designed to equip personnel with the skills needed to maintain law and order, prevent electoral violence and safeguard the credibility of the voting process across the country.

The training, which commenced on October 22 in Abuja, is being conducted in collaboration with the Nigeria Police Trust Fund. It is expected to strengthen officers’ ability to respond to election-related threats, manage crowds, gather intelligence and handle disputes in line with established laws and professional standards.

Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu has warned officers against taking sides with political parties or candidates. He emphasised that police personnel must remain neutral throughout the electoral process, insisting that their responsibility is to protect citizens and ensure that every eligible voter can exercise their rights without intimidation.

The police leadership also highlighted the need to prevent election-related offences, including political violence, voter harassment and the disruption of polling activities. Officers have been urged to demonstrate discipline and professionalism, while anyone found abusing their authority or acting in favour of political interests could face disciplinary measures.

As part of efforts to promote transparency, the Force has also indicated plans to establish a round-the-clock channel for receiving complaints about police conduct during election operations. The initiative forms part of broader preparations to strengthen public confidence and ensure that security personnel contribute to peaceful, credible and orderly elections in 2027.
