The Federal Government has stepped up efforts to improve the identification of beneficiaries of its social intervention programmes, with 15.6 million Nigerians reportedly linked to the National Social Register through their National Identification Numbers (NIN).

The initiative is designed to strengthen the credibility of the database used to identify poor and vulnerable households, while reducing cases of duplicate entries and ensuring that government assistance reaches eligible beneficiaries.

The National Social Register, managed through the National Social Safety Nets Coordinating Office (NASSCO), serves as a nationwide database for identifying households that require social protection and poverty alleviation support.

The integration of NIN into the register is expected to improve the accuracy of beneficiaries’ records and make it easier for relevant government agencies to verify identities before providing assistance. It is also part of broader efforts to strengthen transparency and accountability in the administration of social welfare programmes.

The exercise requires collaboration among federal and state authorities, local government councils and other stakeholders responsible for identifying vulnerable people within their communities.

Local government authorities are particularly important to the process because of their proximity to residents and their ability to support grassroots verification and ensure that eligible households are properly captured.

The Federal Government is pursuing the reform as part of its broader social protection agenda, with the objective of improving the delivery of assistance to Nigerians facing economic hardship.

The success of the initiative will depend on accurate data collection, effective verification and sustained coordination among the agencies responsible for implementing social intervention programmes.
