The Nigerian Senate has paid tribute to former Delta State Governor, Dr Emmanuel Eweta Uduaghan, recognising his contributions to healthcare, infrastructure and economic development in the Niger Delta. The lawmakers observed a minute’s silence in his honour during plenary yesterday.
The tribute followed a motion sponsored by Senator Joel-Onowakpo Thomas, representing Delta South, alongside other lawmakers. They described Uduaghan as a medical doctor and public servant whose years in government were marked by efforts to improve healthcare delivery, education and living conditions across Delta State.
During his tenure as governor from 2007 to 2015, Uduaghan introduced free healthcare programmes for pregnant women and children under five. Senators also highlighted investments in medical facilities, road infrastructure and the development of Asaba International Airport as notable projects associated with his administration.
Lawmakers further recalled his role in promoting cooperation among South-South states through the BRACED Commission, which sought to strengthen regional economic integration and reduce dependence on crude oil. His administration’s development agenda also included efforts to encourage investment, diversify the state’s economy and promote peace in the Niger Delta.
Following the debate, the Senate resolved to convey its condolences to Uduaghan’s family, the Delta State Government and the people of the state. It also urged the state government to preserve records of major programmes and projects undertaken during his administration, saying the documentation would help future generations understand and assess his contributions to Delta State’s development.
