The leadership crisis rocking the Bauchi State chapter of the Allied Peoples Movement, APM, has escalated following a faction’s decision to remove the state chairman, Auwal Isah, and name Nasiru Nuru Marafa as interim leader. The development has exposed widening divisions within the party as political activities gather momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The faction announced the decision at a press conference, where party secretary Mohammed Nasir Yahaya accused Isah of violating the party’s constitution and failing to manage its affairs effectively. Among the allegations raised were financial irregularities, inadequate record-keeping and the failure to maintain an official bank account for the party.
Yahaya also attributed the disagreement to political changes following Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed’s move to the APM. He alleged that the restructuring of the party’s state leadership favoured new entrants linked to the government and the Peoples Democratic Party, creating dissatisfaction among some longstanding members.
According to the faction, attempts to resolve the dispute through a harmonisation committee failed to produce an agreement. Yahaya said the aggrieved members had taken their complaints to the party’s national leadership and the Independent National Electoral Commission, seeking intervention over the disputed leadership arrangements.
However, the move has attracted opposition from within the party. APM factional publicity secretary Abdulshakur Danlami Mohammed challenged Yahaya’s claim to the position of state secretary and indicated that the party would respond to the situation. The competing claims have deepened uncertainty over the party’s leadership in Bauchi as efforts to establish control of its state structure continue.
