The Lagos State Security Trust Fund (LSSTF) and the Nigeria Customs Service are exploring ways to deepen cooperation in tackling smuggling, illegal trade and other criminal activities threatening public safety.

The Executive Secretary and Chief Executive Officer of LSSTF, Dr. Ayodele Ogunsan, disclosed the fund’s readiness to work more closely with the Customs Service during a meeting with the Comptroller of the Federal Operations Unit, Zone A, Comptroller Oladapo Afeni, who visited the organisation’s office in Alausa, Ikeja, Lagos.

Ogunsan explained that effective security management requires contributions from different government institutions, stressing that agencies responsible for border enforcement and the interception of prohibited goods play an important role in protecting lives and safeguarding national interests.

He also expressed the fund’s willingness to explore areas of support, including the provision of operational equipment, logistics and other resources that could improve the effectiveness of security operations.

According to him, Customs officers help prevent dangerous and prohibited items from entering the country through illegal channels. Their enforcement activities, he noted, complement the work of conventional security agencies in addressing threats to public safety.

In his response, Afeni emphasised the importance of building a stronger working relationship between the Customs Service and the Lagos State Security Trust Fund to improve the fight against smuggling and related offences.

He explained that the Federal Operations Unit, Zone A, headquartered in Lagos, is responsible for anti-smuggling enforcement across the South-West region.

Afeni expressed optimism that closer cooperation between both organisations would strengthen security operations in Lagos and neighbouring states, while supporting broader efforts to combat criminal activities and protect the country’s economic interests.
