The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has made it clear that no student should be compelled to obtain a loan under the Federal Government’s education financing programme, emphasising that the decision to borrow rests entirely with individual students.
The clarification reinforces the voluntary nature of the initiative, which was established to ease the financial burden of tertiary education on students and their families. The scheme is designed to provide support for those who struggle to meet school-related expenses, not to impose additional financial obligations on students who do not need assistance.
NELFUND maintained that access to the loan programme should be guided by individual financial needs and personal decisions. Students who can independently finance their education are at liberty to continue doing so without applying for government-backed loans.
The agency’s position also highlights the need for tertiary institutions to properly educate students about the programme instead of creating the impression that securing a loan is a condition for continuing their education. School administrators and student representatives are expected to communicate the policy accurately to prevent confusion.
Although the scheme provides interest-free financial assistance to eligible applicants, beneficiaries must understand that the money is repayable under the applicable legal framework. Students are therefore encouraged to examine the conditions attached to the facility before making a commitment.
NELFUND said the broader objective of the initiative is to prevent financial hardship from denying qualified Nigerians the opportunity to pursue higher education. By providing assistance to students who need it, the government hopes to reduce the pressure associated with tuition and other approved educational expenses.
The Fund urged students to obtain information about the scheme through appropriate channels and make decisions based on their circumstances. It reiterated that the programme is an option for eligible students seeking financial support, not a mandatory borrowing arrangement for everyone enrolled in a tertiary institution.
