More than 100 students and teachers from public secondary schools in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, have reportedly been hospitalised following another suspected poisonous gas emission believed to have originated from a nearby industrial facility. The incident triggered alarm in the community, with several victims said to have collapsed after inhaling the unidentified substance.
Those affected were drawn from schools including Anglican Girls Grammar School in Obalende and Our Lady of Apostles Secondary School in the Epe Garage area. The victims were taken to the state hospital and other private medical facilities for treatment, while several schools reportedly suspended activities as a precaution.
Ijebu-Ode Local Government Chairman, Dare Alebiosu, confirmed the incident but said the exact number of affected persons had yet to be established. The development has renewed concerns because it reportedly represents the second similar occurrence in the area within two months.
Ogun State Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya, said environmental monitoring equipment detected elevated methane concentrations within the affected zone. He explained that a multi-agency team had been mobilised to investigate the source of the emissions and test for other potentially dangerous substances, including hydrogen sulphide and volatile organic compounds.
Authorities are continuing efforts to determine the cause of the incident, assess possible exposure risks and prevent a recurrence. Residents have been advised to exercise caution around areas with unusual gas odours and avoid open flames or other ignition sources until the situation is properly assessed. The precise source of the suspected emission has not yet been conclusively established.
