Tension erupted at Ogolonto Bus Stop in Ikorodu, Lagos State, after a collision involving a Bus Rapid Transit vehicle and a commercial motorcyclist reportedly triggered a violent reaction from residents and other bystanders. The incident, which occurred on Friday, October 16, resulted in the BRT bus being set ablaze, raising fresh concerns about public safety and mob violence.
Reports from the scene indicated that the motorcyclist was allegedly struck by the BRT vehicle while travelling along the dedicated bus corridor. The collision reportedly led to the rider’s death, although the full circumstances surrounding the accident had not been officially established at the time of reporting.
Following the incident, an angry crowd reportedly attacked the bus and its driver before setting the vehicle on fire. Police officers and officials of the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps intervened and rescued the driver from the crowd, preventing the situation from escalating further.
The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority confirmed that a collision had occurred between the bus and a motorcycle along the BRT lane. Its spokesperson said the motorcyclist was reportedly using the restricted corridor but could not independently confirm reports of the rider’s death. The incident also raised concerns about compliance with traffic regulations and the protection of public transport infrastructure.
Authorities are expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the collision and the subsequent destruction of the bus. The incident serves as a reminder that road accidents should be handled through lawful procedures rather than mob action, which can endanger lives, destroy public property and obstruct investigations.
