Standard Chartered Bank Nigeria Limited has confirmed Ayodeji Adelagun as its substantive Chief Executive Officer following approval from the Central Bank of Nigeria. The appointment formalises his leadership of the bank’s Nigerian operations after serving in an acting capacity since January 2026.
Adelagun, popularly known as Deji, brings more than 26 years of experience in banking and financial markets across Africa. He joined Standard Chartered in 2007 and has held several senior positions within the institution, building expertise in financial markets, trading and business leadership.
Before his confirmation, he served as Executive Director and Head of Markets for Nigeria and Africa, as well as Head of Rates and Credit Trading for West Africa. He also chairs the board of Standard Chartered Capital and Advisory Nigeria and holds a regional leadership role overseeing markets across Africa.
The bank said the leadership transition comes as it seeks to strengthen relationships with customers, support businesses and investors, and expand opportunities through its international network. Adelagun has described Nigeria as an important long-term market for the institution, emphasising the need to build on its existing strengths and deliver greater value to clients.
Under his leadership, the bank is expected to focus on sustainable growth, stronger client partnerships and connecting Nigerian businesses with investment and trade opportunities across Africa, Asia, the Middle East and other global markets. His confirmation marks a new phase in the bank’s leadership as it continues to position itself within Nigeria’s financial services industry.
