The Federal Government of Nigeria is facing a legal challenge at the ECOWAS Community Court of Justice over the handling of ₦78.8 billion earmarked for cash transfers to vulnerable households across the country.
The case reportedly raises questions about the administration, distribution and accountability of funds intended to provide financial assistance to low-income Nigerians. The cash transfer programme was introduced to cushion the effects of economic hardship and support households struggling with rising living costs.
The legal action is expected to place the implementation of the programme under scrutiny, particularly regarding whether the intended beneficiaries received the assistance and whether the funds were managed in line with the programme’s objectives.
The dispute also highlights broader concerns about transparency in public spending and the effectiveness of social intervention programmes. With millions of Nigerians facing economic pressures, the management of funds designed to support vulnerable citizens remains an important public accountability issue.
However, the filing of a case does not establish that any funds were misappropriated or that the Federal Government has been found liable. The court proceedings will determine the issues raised by the claimant and any responses presented by the government, subject to the applicable legal process.
