The Ebonyi Town Union Association in Anambra State has condemned the alleged murder of 23-year-old Mmesoma Umeorini in Uga community, Aguata Local Government Area, urging residents to remain calm and allow the law to take its course.
The deceased’s former boyfriend, identified as Chima Ofoeke, has been arrested in connection with the incident. According to preliminary accounts, the suspect allegedly linked the killing to the breakdown of their relationship and reportedly led security operatives to where her remains were recovered.
Reacting to the tragedy, the association’s President-General, Ambassador Moses Igwe, expressed sympathy with the victim’s family and the Uga community. He stressed that relationship disagreements or rejection could never justify taking another person’s life.
The group also appealed to residents to avoid retaliation, hostility and the stigmatisation of innocent Ebonyi indigenes living in Anambra. It maintained that the alleged actions of one individual should not be used to condemn an entire community.
Meanwhile, the Anambra State Commissioner of Police has directed that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Awka for a thorough investigation. The association called for justice for the deceased and urged both communities to preserve peace while the authorities establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
