A school transport driver is facing police investigation in Delta State following allegations that he abducted a teenage student, sexually assaulted her and demanded money from her family before releasing her.
The suspect, identified as 28-year-old Onome Lucky Ughagha, was apprehended by police operatives in Sapele after detectives launched a search following a complaint from the victim’s father.
According to the police, the father reported the girl missing on October 20, 2026, prompting an investigation by officers attached to the Sapele Area Command. During the incident, the suspect allegedly demanded ₦503,000 from the family and threatened to kill the student if his demand was not met.
The girl was subsequently found abandoned along Oton Road in Sapele after the ransom was reportedly paid. She was later reunited with her family, while arrangements were made for her to receive medical attention following the alleged assault.
Police spokesperson Bright Edafe said investigators pursued the suspect after he reportedly abandoned the school bus and fled. He was eventually located at a hideout in the Ajimele area of Sapele and arrested on October 23.
The police also questioned the school’s principal and vice-principal as part of efforts to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident. Investigators are expected to gather further evidence before determining the next steps in the case.
The suspect is expected to be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Asaba for further interrogation and investigation, according to the police.
Delta State Commissioner of Police Samuel Erale condemned the alleged abuse and reiterated the command’s commitment to protecting minors against criminal attacks. He also called on parents, school authorities and transport operators to strengthen safeguards for children under their care.
The police said the investigation would continue to establish the full circumstances of the incident and ensure that anyone found responsible is dealt with in accordance with the law.
