Political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections have intensified in Anambra South following a declaration of support for Chief Ebuka Onunkwo, the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate for the senatorial district, by residents of Unubi in Nnewi South Local Government Area.

The show of support came during a community reception hosted by Chief Amobi Ogum. Before the gathering, Onunkwo visited the palace of Unubi’s traditional ruler, Igwe Francis Umennajiego, where he was received by the monarch and members of his cabinet.

Speaking at the event, community representatives highlighted Onunkwo’s business activities, job creation efforts and community development initiatives as reasons for backing his ambition. They urged residents to focus on candidates’ records, plans and commitment to public service rather than allowing financial inducements to determine their political choices.

In response, Onunkwo thanked the traditional ruler and residents for their reception, promising to pursue effective representation and promote employment opportunities if elected. He also pledged to provide jobs for two qualified accountants from Unubi and assured residents that his proposed empowerment programmes would accommodate beneficiaries regardless of their political affiliations.

The gathering was attended by NDC officials in Anambra State, including the party’s state chairman, Ikem Uzoezie. Onunkwo also urged supporters to maintain peaceful relationships with people belonging to other political parties, stressing that political differences should not divide communities. The engagement forms part of his efforts to build support across Anambra South ahead of the 2027 senatorial election.
