The Yobe State Government has activated its public health emergency response system and strengthened border surveillance as part of measures to prevent the spread of Ebola Virus Disease into the state. Authorities say the move is precautionary, stressing that no Ebola case has been recorded in Yobe.
The state’s Ministry of Health announced the measures in Damaturu, explaining that an emergency preparedness plan had been developed to support early detection, investigation and rapid response to any suspected infection. The State Emergency Operations Centre is coordinating the activities in line with guidelines from the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention.
Given Yobe’s proximity to an international border, officials are increasing monitoring at key entry points and improving cooperation with border and transport authorities. Surveillance has also been strengthened across the state’s 17 local government areas to ensure that reports of unusual illnesses are investigated promptly.
The government is also intensifying public awareness campaigns through radio, television, community announcements and traditional rulers. Residents have been advised to maintain proper hand hygiene, avoid direct contact with the blood and other bodily fluids of sick people, and promptly report unusual illnesses or unexplained deaths to health facilities.
The precautionary measures follow Nigeria’s confirmation of an imported Ebola case in the Federal Capital Territory on October 20. Health authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant without panicking, obtain information from official health agencies and avoid spreading unverified reports or stigmatizing people identified as contacts of suspected or confirmed cases.
