Iran has declared that the outcome of Israel’s upcoming legislative elections will not change Tehran’s position towards the Israeli government, signalling that a change in political leadership is unlikely to ease tensions between the two countries.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei made the position known on Monday during his weekly press briefing. He maintained that Iran’s approach would remain unchanged, regardless of who emerges from the Israeli polls.
Baqaei also criticised Israel’s leadership, accusing it of contributing to violence and instability across the Middle East. His comments came as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu faces a closely contested election, with regional security remaining a major campaign issue.
The diplomatic exchange follows heightened tensions over threats of further military action against Iran by Israel and the United States. Netanyahu has reportedly called for measures to remove what he considers the Iranian threat, including comments about efforts to overthrow Tehran’s government.
Iran dismissed the Israeli prime minister’s remarks as empty threats and a sign of desperation. The latest statements highlight the continuing hostility between the two countries, with the election outcome unlikely, in Tehran’s view, to bring an immediate shift in their strained relations.
