The race towards Nigeria’s 2027 general elections has entered another phase as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) works to resolve complaints arising from the nomination of candidates by political parties.
The electoral body is expected to issue a fresh version of its candidates’ register after examining submissions from individuals and political parties who questioned some of the details contained in the earlier publication.
INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, SAN, confirmed the ongoing exercise on Tuesday during a visit to Gombe State, where he interacted with journalists at a meeting involving commission officials from the North-East.
Some of the matters brought before the commission reportedly concern errors in candidates’ names and allegations that certain aspirants were nominated by more than one political party.
Amupitan explained that the commission allowed the complaint process to run for the stipulated 14 days to give officials sufficient time to examine the issues presented to them.
Although the chairman did not specify when the revised register would be released, he indicated that the commission was preparing to publish an updated version after the review.
The outcome will be closely watched by political parties and aspirants as preparations for the 2027 elections continue, particularly by those whose nominations have been affected by the reported discrepancies.
